“I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life and that is why I succeed.” – Michael Jordan
During my undergraduate in college, a former classmate said to me that I would never be able to travel the world teaching people movement and playing songs on my guitar. She suggested I say on the med school path and follow the footsteps of my grandfather, who was a dentist…
This comment resonated deeply within me for years, especially in times of doubt and suffering. I remember thinking at times she was right! I should have stuck with the med school path. Follow the footsteps of your Grandfather, he would have been so proud is what my mind would tell me… Remembering the words of the great philosopher Joseph Campbell, and his infamous “Follow your bliss” quote, I meditated on this, and made the conscious decision to never let my mind overtake following my heart.
After college I failed miserably, dropped the ball multiple times, made scattered mistakes over and over again, and let down my mentors. Many times during my early professional years I was laughed off stage, made fun of for singing in the choir, and remember crying myself to sleep in the freezing cold winters of New York City lost in the unknown.
If we are not making mistakes, we are not truly growing! The tenacity, resilience and willpower to never, ever quit when the going becomes tough, is what defines us. Overcoming the lies that our mind feeds us, and remembering to stay truly present is one of life’s greatest obstacles. Failing over and over again, provided invaluable lessons and opportunities for growth.
GOAL CRUSHED! Five years later, here I am traveling the world teaching children and adults how to move freely in all directions of open space, how to heal their bodies by becoming present and aware with AntiGravity Aerial Fitness techniques, contributing to public health and business development world wide, and continuing to pursuit my passions for adventurism and music.
Sharing with the regional teams of Navi AntiGravity Japan throughout Japan was a wonderful experience. It gave me the opportunity to lead, shine new light and educate, while becoming more culturally agile. Working through linguistic challenges are far from easy, and teaching people how to become leaders, how to dig for self confidence in a different culture in a different language pushed me far from my comfort zone. Yet, so much satisfaction and personal growth came from that opportunity, giving me new insight and vision.
If there is one thing for certain, it takes an entire village! None of these accomplishments or successes could have been possible without my support system of people who were there for me in times of rock bottom. When I was literally kicked out to the curb, they were there! I give it all back those people who stepped up and were there when I had nothing. My mentors who inspired, taught, and gave me tools have been and are still monumental aspects of my successes.
I now want to inspire more people to develop the tenacity, and resilience to pursue their biggest dreams regardless of the haters, trolls, challenges and failures. One of my greatest mentors always said that “In life hidden in the forces that pull us down, is the energy to lift us up.” I want to now share this same message with the world and inspire people to “Don’t try, just do it! Never compromise with your mind, follow your heart. Dream bigger!”
Take away? Write down your goals on paper! Remind yourself of them daily. Remember that LOVE is the most powerful energy in the entire universe, therefore plant those goals in LOVE. Find a mentor! They will be invaluable resources, and will provide guidance during times of failure. Don’t try, just do it! Never settle for anything less than your absolute highest self. Follow your heart, and DREAM bigger! Your only limitation is that which your mind creates.
Thank you to all the amazing people who made this dream become a reality. Thank you to the owners, all the beautiful instructors and students at NAVI AntiGravity Japan.
